When every team builds its own version

If the same components get rebuilt across teams and tools, a shared system saves time and keeps everything on brand.

  • Every team has its own version of the same button, form and navigation.

  • The Figma library and the live product have drifted apart.

  • A new brand can't be rolled out across everything without a rebuild.

  • The same accessibility fix keeps being made in different places.

  • You have a component library, but no owner, no documentation and patchy use.

Building one is easy, getting it used is harder

Very few design systems are fully adopted, and the same few accessibility errors repeat across the web, when one fix in a shared component would cover every page.

  1. Audit what you have

Every component across your products, how many versions of each exist, and where they differ.

  2. Build the foundations

Colour, type and spacing as design tokens, shared between design and code so a change happens in one place.

  3. Build the components

In Figma and in code, with every state and accessibility built in, starting with the ones used most.

  4. Document it

When to use each component, when not to, and how to ask for a new one.

  5. Hand over ownership

A named owner, a way to contribute, and a plan to move existing products across.

What a design system is, and isn't

Three things worth knowing first.

A Figma file isn't a design system

Without components in code, documentation and an owner, the design and the product drift apart within a few releases.

It's never finished

A design system is a product your teams use. It needs a backlog, versions and someone looking after it.

You might not need one

One small product with one team may only need a tidy component library. We'll say so if that's you.

Signs of design debt

If three or more of these sound familiar, a design system will probably pay for itself.

  • Designers rebuild components that already exist somewhere else.
  • Developers ask which version of a component is the right one.
  • QA keeps finding the same visual bugs in different places.
  • Accessibility fixes have to be made more than once.
  • A brand change means touching every product by hand.

The things people usually ask

Plain answers about design systems, what's involved and what we need from you. Anything else, just ask.

Can you build on the library we already have?

Usually, yes. We start with an audit and keep what works.

Which tools do you use?

Figma for design. For code, whatever your products are built in.

How do we get teams to use it?

Build it with them, start with the components they use most, and make the system the easiest way to get work done. We plan adoption from the start.
