When your Symfony platform is stuck on an old version

If you're on Symfony 4.4, 5.4 or 6.4, you're running out of support. We'll plan the upgrade to 7.4, and keep the platform running while we do it.

  • Your platform is on Symfony 4.4, which has had no fixes since November 2023.

  • You're on 5.4 or 6.4, and the end of support is coming into view.

  • The PHP version underneath is out of date too, and the hosting is holding you back.

  • You inherited the codebase, and there's little documentation and few tests.

The things people usually ask

Plain answers on how Symfony works, what it costs and what we need from you. Anything else, just ask.

We're on Symfony 5.4. Do we need to upgrade now?

Not urgently, but plan it. 5.4 gets security fixes until February 2029, through an extension funded by Ibexa, but no bug fixes, and newer packages are dropping it. Upgrading in steps now costs less than one big jump later.

How long does an upgrade take?

It depends on the size of the codebase, how much deprecated code it uses and how many tests it has. We'll audit it and give you a plan and an estimate.

Can you upgrade PHP at the same time?

Yes, and it usually makes sense to. Symfony 7.4 needs PHP 8.2 or later.

Can you build our API?

Yes. We build APIs on Symfony, often with API Platform, which generates the documentation and handles the common parts so the work goes on your business logic.

Symfony or Laravel?

Both are solid PHP frameworks, and Laravel is built on parts of Symfony. Laravel is usually quicker to build with. Symfony suits large, long-lived platforms that need a strict structure. We work with both.

  • CRM, marketing automation and sales tools in one platform.

  • A structured content platform: one source of content for websites, apps and everything else.

  • Ecommerce software for personalised marketing, product search and content.

  • Behaviour analytics: recordings, heatmaps, funnels and friction scores.

  • A visual website platform marketing teams can run themselves.

  • The company behind Claude.

  • Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Ads and Search Console.

  • Amazon's cloud: hosting, databases and AI models for web products.

  • An open-source CMS where editors change content on the page itself.

  • An open-source CMS behind a large share of the web.

  • An open-source PHP framework for web apps and platforms.

  • A JavaScript framework for building fast, interactive front ends.

  • A JavaScript library for building user interfaces.

  • React for iPhone and Android apps, from one codebase.

  • Google's toolkit for building iPhone and Android apps from one codebase.
